best comedy movies of all time

Writing down the best comedy movies of all time is not an easy task. Because, oh man, there are hundreds of funny movies out there, and choosing just a few out of them has never been easy. Maybe the list here would not satisfy your humor standards but in the end at least you would be smiling. I know Comedy Movies are the most controversial category. Everyone has a different taste and sense of humor and they find different things hilarious.

Like some may find classic rom-com movies like Notting Hill funny and some may have an interest in teen girls kind of comedy like Mean Girls. Then there are some who like a touch of reality in comedy films like The Death of Stalin, which serve up uncomfortable truths alongside the fun. And finally, almost all of us like festive spirit, the Christmas films are overflowing with titles that leave you giggling and happy on your couches.

In short, you can’t just push anyone into liking something they don’t wanna like. But I have tried my best here to enlist some of the best comedy movies of all time. So next time you want to turn that frown upside down just follow the list here and forget your worries for some time.

Dumb and Dumber (1994)

Main Cast: Jim Carrey, Jeff Daniels, Lauren Holly
Runtime: 107 minutes
IMDb Rating: 7.3

Jim Carrey in a movie and it does not have any fun element, well that’s the most impossible thing for me. In this film, Carrey is joined by the dramatic actor Jeff Daniels in an absolutely ridiculous performance as two well-intentioned fools who just want to do right. This amazingly hilarious movie ranked pretty high on the list of best Jim Carry Movies.

The story starts when Carrey as Lloyd finds a briefcase left behind by a woman he drops at the airport, he and his friend Harry (Daniels) go on a totally unnecessary strenuous cross-country road trip. All of this just in hopes to win her heart and return her briefcase. But a real hilarious adventure begins when they discover the contents of luggage. They say about the film:

“The plot, of course, is merely an excuse for an endless series of gags, and the percentage of them that score is fairly high”

Ace Ventura, Pet Detective (1994) is another major hit comedy by Jim Carry.

Meet the Parents (2000)

Main Cast: Ben Stiller, Robert De Niro, Teri Polo

‘I have nipples, Greg. Could you milk me?’

The dialogue here sounds crazy, isn’t it?. Well, Meet the parents is full of these crazy dialogues and epic funny scenes to leave its mark on our memories. We all know meeting our partner’s parents have never been easy but it was worse with Greg Focker (Ben Stiller). The movie starts with Greg falling in love with Pam (Teri Polo).

He wants to make a good impression on pam’s father. But turns out his potential father-in-law is a former CIA agent with an ultra suspicious nature. And worst, he also has a polygraph lie-detector machine at his disposal. You will find yourself on the edge, smiling and sometimes crazily laughing throughout the movie.

Mean Girls (2004)

Main Cast: Lindsay Lohan, Jonathan Bennett, Amanda Seyfried, Rachel McAdams, Lizzy Caplan, Daniel Franzese
Runtime: 97 minutes
IMDb Rating: 7/10

“It’s not my fault you’re like, in love with me, or something!”

Mean Words they are. aren’t they?. Well, this movie penned by Tina Fey is loaded with such spiteful and mean remarks. Fill with hilarious laugh-out moments, Mean Girls is one of the classic and epic Best Comedy movies of all time. The plot revolves around a sweet souled girl Cady (Lohan) trying to fit in the new school.

The story starts when Cady moves to Chicago along with her father and gets admission to high school. She is confronted by the school’s brittle hierarchy where popularity means everything. There she met Caplan and a zinger-zapping gay guy (Franzese) who adopt Cady as one of their own and, just for fun and laughs, and set her on a mission. As a result of which she finds herself infiltrating the famous girl group The Plastics lead by a terrible girl Regina (McAdams).

The 40-Year-Old Virgin (2005)

Main Cast: Steve Carell, Paul Rudd, Seth Rogen
Runtime: 116 minutes
IMDb Rating: 7.1/10

“He’s A Really Nice Guy And All, But I’m Pretty Sure That He Is A Serial Murderer.”

The 40-year-old virgin is all about the funny and incredible journey of a 40-year-old virgin Andy Stitzer (Steve Carell). The film did an absolutely great job of reminding the world that Paul Rudd is a hilarious and lovely delight.

The storyline revolves around Andy Stitzer who is an amiable single guy and works at a big-box store. He has been living alone for 40-year and spends his free time playing video games and systemizing his action-figure collection. In all his 40 years Andy has never had sex. So his friends, including the laid-back David (Paul Rudd), push Andy towards losing his virginity get this label off of him. In all this drama and attempts to get over his awkwardness around females, Andy meets local shop owner Trish (Catherine Keener), and finally, there begins a speculative romance.

Borat (2006)

Main Cast: Sacha Baron Cohen, Kevin Davitian
Runtime: 86 minutes
IMDb Rating: 7.3/10

“My wife she is dead. She die in a field, died from work, an accident, but is not important, I have a new wife.”

Some of us were familiar with the character of Borat from The Ali G Show, but no one was expecting Borat coming, and that how far Cohen was willing to go just for a joke. It takes a lot of effort to keep a straight face while facing the gullible members of the public. But Sacha Baron Cohen did it and proved he is a master of it. The movie has plenty to laugh at and also serves as a sobering reminder of the sheer boiling level of racism and misogyny.

The movie starts with Cohen Travelling under the guise of a radio host from Kazakhstan. He trawls the ways of the USA on a fact-finding mission that turns into a stalking exercise across the country when he got the glimpse of Pamela Anderson’s ample charms. First, he coaxed himself into the welcoming arms of the public before shocking them with an appalling arsenal of faked Kazakh culture practices.

Hangover (2009)

Main Cast: Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis, Ed Helms, Justin Bartha
Runtime: 100 minutes
IMDb Rating: 7.7/10

“YOU ARE LITERALLY TOO STUPID TO INSULT.”

Hangover really is one hell of a ride and you would be laughing so hard throughout the movie. We all have crazy friends but not like Zach Galifianakis. With his stupid and idiocy, Hangover gave us a heartful of a laugh. And it is really a movie which will leave its mark on you. At least it has left on me.

The movie starts two days before Doug’s (Justin Bartha) wedding. He and his three friends (Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis) drive to Las Vegas for a wild and memorable bachelor’s party. The fun starts, when the three groomsmen wake up the next morning and can’t remember a thing and the situation worsens with the absence of Doug. With little time left to the wedding, the three pals re-trace their steps and find Doug so they can get him back to the aisle on time.

The fun of the hangover doesn’t just stop on one movie. The crazy and hilarious journey of these four friends continued and Hangover II & Hangover III came. These parts are equally funny as the first part is. And I think HANGOVER really is and will remain one of the best comedy movies of all time.

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World (2010)

Main Cast: Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth, Chris Evans, Aubrey Plaza
Runtime: 112 minutes
IMDb Rating: 7.5/10

Wallace Wells: If you want something bad, you have to fight for it. Step up your game, Scott. Break out the L-word.

Scott Pilgrim: Lesbian?

After the epic release of  Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, Edgar Wright gave us another good laugh through his amazing movie Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. Punctuating jokes with crisp editing, perfectly choreographed fight scenes, and graphic imagery, and by cooking up his own strange alchemy Wright allows all the fun elements to come together in a perfect potion.

The story revolves around a young bass guitarist Scott Pilgrim has always been famous among girls and usually, the problem is getting rid of them. But the real action starts when Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) skates into his heart, he finds she has the most troublesome army of ex-boyfriends who will do anything to eliminate him from her list.

Bridesmaids (2011)

Main Cast: Rose Byrne, Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Wendi McLendon
Runtime: 132 minutes
IMDb Rating: 6.8/10

HELEN: Why are you smiling Annie?
ANNIE: It’s just, it’s the first time I’ve ever seen you look ugly. It makes me kinda happy.

A strong dramatic undercurrent—this is a story about relationships and friendships at heart, which makes the film memorable, and enduring at the same time. The jokes in Bridesmaids are amazing and it’s a hilarious movie, kudos to the terrifically dynamic performances of Wiig, Maya Rudolph, and Rose Byrne.

The story revolves around Annie trying to make everything perfect for her best friend’s wedding. Annie is a chef, and is penniless, is asked by her best friend, Lillian, to be her maid of honor. Even in an economical crisis, she makes her way through the strange, uncommon, and expensive rituals associated with her job as the bride’s go-to gal. Join the wild journey of lilian’s maid of honor, Annie, and other bridesmaids to get a really good laugh. Because the movie is full of hilarious yet epic dialogues and scenarios.

The Death of Stalin (2017)

Main Cast: Jason Isaacs, Steve Buscemi, Rupert Friend, Michael Palin
Runtime: 107 minutes
IMDb Rating: 7.2/10

“You’re not even a person, you’re a testicle!”

The writer/director Armando Iannucci has provided us with a good and bitter laugh through this movie. With all the good laugh this movie gave us it gets hard to notice how dark the character of Stalin is. His depiction of American politicos as venal, nasty, and crassly awful persons keeps us hooked to the screens throughout the movie.

The story revolves around venal politicians vying for power and authority in a game of snakes and ladders where in the end the loser ends up in the gulag. The movie has all the characters equally poisonous where we think of Jason Isaacs’s Marshal Zhukov as a hero. Because at least he is open about his psychotic behavior. Isn’t he?. In short, if you are a fan of comedy with a touch of critical thinking then this film is totally for you.

Palm Springs (2020)

Main Cast: Andy Samberg, Cristin Milioti
Runtime: 90 minutes
IMDb Rating: 7.4/10

“One time, I smoked a bunch of crystal, and made it all the way to Equatorial Guinea.”

Not only one of the century’s best comedy movies so far, but it’s also one of the best romcoms we have got to watch after a long time. This time-looped romantic comedy movie is here to stay forever with us. The film is an absolute delight, a buddy comedy, and has a lot of rom-com twists in vulnerable chemistry between Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti.

In short Palm Springs is a silly spin on a time loop comedy and at the same time delivers a compelling romance you want to root for as Samberg and Milioti’s characters. Palm spring is one of those movies which will leave you with a heartful laugh and at the same time pondering over some of life’s biggest questions. The movie at its heart is a self growth film too and will make us realize that not every time we can do everything alone.
