Mattel, the American toy corporation that owns Barbie, honored Laverne Cox, the actor and LGBTQ activist from Orange Is the New Black, with the first-ever trans-Barbie Doll. On her 50th birthday, May 27, 2022, the Emmy Award-winning performer received an early present.
When asked about the significance of obtaining a trans-Barbie doll inspired by her, the actor openly said that she was never permitted to play with dolls as a child. Later in life, the actor purchased a Barbie doll for herself to cure her inner child of the horrors she had to through.

Mattel presented her with a Barbie doll in her likeness to honor her significant contributions to raising awareness about issues affecting the LGBT community and advocating for their rights.
The actor revealed in an interview with People that her mother would not let her play with dolls as a child since she was labeled male at birth. The performer, on the other hand, chose to offer her inner kid a second shot.
I was in treatment in my 30s, and I told my therapist that I had been denied the opportunity to play with Barbie dolls.” “And my therapist told me, ‘It’s never too late to have a joyful childhood, and the best thing you can do for your inner kid is going out and buy yourself a Barbie doll,'” she told the site. Her mother began sending her Barbie dolls on her birthdays, which she said became a healing symbol for her.

“It’s really meaningful for me to have my Barbie doll for so many reasons,” Laverne Cox said in an interview with the BBC about owning a trans-Barbie doll. I hope that kids of all gender identities can dream while looking at this Barbie.
“The space of play, playing with dolls, the space of building worlds with dolls is that space of dreaming,” she elaborated on her statement. And now kids can fantasize with a Laverne Cox Barbie, the first transgender Barbie, which is a lovely realm of potential,” the actor added.
